One of the big controversies over replacing our lightbulbs with fluorescent "eco" bulbs, is those bulbs aren't really very eco friendly. Sure they save on energy, but they also contain mercury, and dropping the bulb or improper dicscarding of the bulb is an environmental hazard. I replaced my bulbs with the mercury fluorescent a few years ago. While I have saved money, I am continually worried about breaking one. I already have had too much mercury exposure in my lifetime.LED lights are true eco solution. The problem with this light source has been affordability. Mike Adams of Natural News has continually promoted LED lights. However, the link he provides to the group he supports that sells them, shows just how cost prohibitive they are for most consumers.
A couple of weeks ago on Treehugger, I read an article on Purdue University developing new technology to reduce cost and increase effectiveness of LEDs.
"And since about 1/3 of U.S. electricity is used to produce light, this is major. "If you replaced existing lighting with solid-state lighting, following some reasonable estimates for the penetration of that technology based on economics and other factors, it could reduce the amount of energy we consume for lighting by about one-third."The new technology of LEDs uses a crystalline structure aligned to the crystalline silicon which is more cost effective and with less flaws than the sapphire-based LEDs. The originating article is here. It sounds very promising indeed.
